At 92 years of age, the ‘Godfather of Makeup’ Dick Smith has passed away. A legend and pioneer in effects makeup, Dick Smith used an astonishing array of techniques and camera trickery. He will probably always be best known for his work on The Exorcist and The Godfather. But his impressive resume also includes classics like Taxi Driver, Amadeus, Marathon Man and The Deer Hunter. his is also the first makeup artist to win an Academy Award for lifetime achievement. Smith began his career in television and won a Primetime Emmy Award for his work on “Mark Twain Tonight!” with Hal Holbrook.
The master is gone. My friend and mentor Dick Smith is no longer with us. The world will not be the same.
