Vox producer Laura Bult spoke with a retired school teacher Kathy about how climate goals may seem impossible and the power consumption of modern computing technology, including Generative Artificial Intelligence.
How much electricity do our digital lives require? I think it is a vital piece of data for our everyday life. Which is unironically being stored online at the cost of more electrical consumption.
This is not a puzzle, a weird twist, or an unsolvable problem. This is something we should know to aid in meeting energy demands and reaching renewable energy generation goals.
We will continue to have more energy demands collectively even as some of us strive to consume more efficiently as individuals. More and more data centers will continue to open and the demands will persist. Along with improved efficiency and power grid upgrades, knowledge is a vital tool.
