Augmented reality, virtual reality, and the metaverse are buzzwords thrown around for years. With social media, doom-scrolling, and COVID lockdown, many people have wanted a deeper and more meaningful connection to others; or maybe that was always wanted. CNBC looks at why Facebook parent company Meta has been willing to bet big on the metaverse.
Facebook changed its company name to Meta in October of 2021. That was also when CEO Mark Zuckerberg showed the world his vision of a digital future with VR headsets. A couple of months later, the company launched Horizon Worlds. The hype about the metaverse was everywhere, even though few could explain what it entailed.
