A resolution to take action benefits from structure and support. In this Daily Stoic video, Ryan Holiday discusses stoic practices and ideas that can be used as tools for well-being. Holiday talks about the reasoning behind each stoic practice, the benefits of each, and his personal experiences.
“If you’re resolving to be better this year you’re probably not going to just get there on your own,” Holiday begins discussing the stoic practice of getting help. While having a mentor is ideal (one-on-one learning), it is not a requirement. Learning from those who have been where you are or where you want to be can be achieved through remote learning, study, and supportive communities.
Being focused on what knowledge you consume is important. There will never be a shortage of useless (to you) knowledge. Being judicious and mindful of time spent on a task will aid in finding and prioritizing what benefits you.
I highly recommend stoic practice #4, daily walks. Holiday describes a quote from Søren Kierkegaard, “Every day I walk myself into a state of well-being and I walk away from illness.” My walks have been of immense help in my recovery from a traumatic brain injury a few years ago. A walk will do wonders.
