Two Watchmakers Reveal The Difficulty in Making a Perfect Watch

Some may see mechanical watches as relics, but many see the allure of the intricate gears, springs, and ornate details that define expertly crafted timepieces. In Great Work from Daily Mail, Roland Murphy and Cameron Weiss discuss some of their processes and ongoing work to preserve and elevate their craft.

Great Works by Daily Mail is a series exploring the distinct yet complementary styles of two masters of their craft. In this video, Roland Murphy and Cameron Weiss share their passion, techniques, and artistry in creating amazing timepieces.

Roland Murphy explains, “A lot of decoration on high-grade traditional watches… is actually hidden and it’s only seen when the watchmaker either assembling the watch or servicing the watch later.” While discussing in-house manufacturing of movement, Murphy explains, “Manufacturing a movement is very difficult, even if somebody hands you the design, it’s like a mountain.”

Cameron Weiss explains, “With watch movements we are producing something that’s obsolete. We are taking from historical examples and then adding our own aesthetics maybe some little updates.”
