Learn About Spin Gravity for Ringworlds, Space Stations and Spaceships

Overview Effect compares ringworlds, space stations, and vessels that spin to create gravity. The video uses science fiction space stations and spaceships to show how the variables of artificial gravity turn centripetal acceleration into spin gravity.

There are variables to consider when designing a vessel with spin gravity. Angular velocity or “spin rate” is shown in RPM and centripetal acceleration or gravity level is shown in g’s. Another variable is rim speed or tangential velocity. An increase in diameter slows down the spin rate needed for the same amount of gravity. The final variable is radius, but the video explains that it uses diameter.

The Earth is used as a visual comparison and the size of some science fiction space stations is mind-boggling. The video has size comparisons of ships and stations in Mass Effect, Babylon 5, Halo, The Expanse, Interstellar, 2001: A Space Odyssey, 2010: The Year We Make Contact, Project Hail Mary, and Star Wars.
