Behind The Scenes for The Making of The Substance

Writer-director Coralie Fargeat is with Mubi to discuss her latest film, The Substance. Fargeat states that her filming language is through symbolism. “The power of creating emotion, sensation, and a whole story with [a] silent shot. With just filming a location that can say so much without having to tell anything, to me that’s Cinema that’s the way also I love to express myself.”

While discussing Demi Moore, Fargeat mentions her approach and the scenes they are creating. “That was not a huge Hollywood machine, we had a limited budget… it was more doing it in an indie way.” I am blown away that The Substance was created, with those impressive practical effects, for less than $20 million.

In The Substance, Elisabeth Sparkle is fired from her aerobics show on her 50th birthday. Amid her distress, a laboratory offers her a substance that promises to transform her into an enhanced version of herself.

Here is the official Mubi page for The Substance.
